FIFTEEN

I AM NOT MUCH inclined to trust, So the first thing I do after leaving Rian’s room is not to attend Lune. Instead, I go straight to where I know Taris should be sleeping, as I told him to last night. Because though Taris has told me over and over against to trust him, I don’t. And I’m not so stupid not to put two and two together and realize that if the man with Lune last night sounded like Taris, there is a possibility, no matter how remote, that he is the one sleeping with her.

I pick the lock, throw the door open, and find Taris lying in the tiny room, his legs bent to fit into a bed too small for someone his height. He stirs at the light pouring in, but I don’t give him any time to adjust.

“Have you been here all night?”

“What…in…Fate’s…Fancy, Soleil?” he groans, cursing and shielding his eyes from the light. “Fuck me. What are you on about?”

“Stick out your foot,” I demand.

Taris groans, but when I start digging under the blankets for his ankle, he obliges. Perhaps too roughly, I jerk up the leg of his sleepwear trousers and inspect his foot and ankle from just about every angle. But: no tattoo. And even when I insist on examining the other leg as well, there’s nothing there. No layer of makeup, no fake bandage, no tattoo.

I feel foolish.

“Can I go back to sleep, now?” Taris mumbles. “You promised me until nine.”

“Are you sleeping with Lune?” I demand abruptly.

He snorts and flops his head back down on his pillow. “I wish.”

“Taris, I'm serious. Are you involved with her?”

“I'm serious, too: do you think I'd be in this tiny bed if I could be in hers?”

I grimace. “Don’t be disgusting.”

“I’m not. Her bed is huge and she’s a midget. I could use that mattress.”

“She’s nearly my height.”

“And you’re short, too.”

I’m not, and it annoys me that Taris says so. But at the same time, I’m relieved, because if he’s teasing me, it means he doesn’t hate me. I hope.

“Can I ask why you think I would be enjoying the nocturnal company of a highborn lady?” he yawns.

Though I’m already starting to feel embarrassed about it all, I fill him in.

“…Let me get this straight: you saw a man sleeping with Lune, who looks and sounds vaguely like me, and your logical assumption is that I am said man.”

“Well, when you say it like that, it seems ridiculous,” I admit.

“You’re ridiculous,” he grumbles, and pulls the blanket back around himself. “Give me my extra hour of sleep and I’ll come find you and the prince.”

“…Now that you’re awake anyway, can’t you just get up now?”

I hear him mutter some less than charitable things about me. This time, I can’t blame him. At least he hasn’t said anything about my clothes. So he hasn’t noticed, he doesn’t care, or he isn’t surprised. I’m not sure which is best.

I leave him and head to Lune’s rooms instead.
